The law and TILE

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess what cannot be avoided, and reduce the risk. Before any task, assess the Task, the Individual doing it, the Load and the Environment.

If the honest answer is that the task cannot be done safely as planned, stop and find another way. No shift pressure justifies a preventable back injury.

Assisting children

People are not loads. Never lift a child manually where equipment is specified in their handling plan, never drag a child by the arms, and never use a hold that has not been taught to you. Explain what you are doing and seek the child's cooperation and consent at each step.

Hoists and slings must only be used by staff signed off as competent, with the correct sling size, and — where the plan says so — with two people. Check equipment for damage and the LOLER inspection date before use.

After an injury

Report any strain, twinge or injury the same day. Under RIDDOR, certain injuries must be reported to the HSE, and this can only happen if you have told someone.

Recurring difficulty with a particular task is a signal that the risk assessment needs updating, not that you should try harder.
